Intensive forest management techniques are increasingly common in the forests of the Southeast. Productivity of pine plantations has increased 50-100% over growth rates a decade ago. While more effective competition control has resulted in substantial increases in pine growth, the basic productivity of the site is found in the soil. As a result, soil physical properties and nutrient management is now being targeted to further increase productivity of the stand.
Purpose:
Managing Forest Soils & Soil Productivity is designed to provide you with a basic understanding (or review) of forest soils, both the physical and chemical properties of soils, soil biology and nutrient cycling. In addition, the instructor will discuss how silvicultural practices impact nutrient cycling, how tillage can ameliorate negative effects of some practices, and impacts of harvesting on long term soil productivity.
Designed for:
This workshop is designed for foresters and forest managers who are responsible for management activities on intensively managed forested tracts. Consultants, state foresters, and other landowner advisors would also benefit from this program.
